About the Book Club

The Global Reads Book Club is an online book club for translators. Love to translate? Love to read? Sign up!

The book club was started in January of 2020. We read and discuss six fiction books in translation, each year. That’s one every two months (Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/June, July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec). Three books are proposed for each cycle and members vote to select one of the three to read together as a group.

Discussions about the books we read take place in a private Slack group (sign up for details!) and we meet “live” once for each book, on Zoom. And, since we are an international bunch, in this case, “live” means online but not in person. We have special guests attend the Zoom meetings from time to time, including translators of the books we read.

Members can choose to read the selected books in the original language or in any translation that exists. Discussion questions address traditional book club themes such as character development, plot, and the use of literary devices, as well as aspects of translation that arise.

We have read books originally written in Japanese, Swedish, Thai, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Korean, and we keep on reading!
