About the Book Club
The Global Reads Book Club is an online book club for translators. Love to translate? Love to read? Sign up!
The book club was started in January of 2020. We read and discuss six fiction books in translation, each year. That’s one every two months (Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr, May/June, July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec). All six books for the year are selected in advance and shared with book club members in the group’s online discussion platform (Discord) and on the email list notifications. That gives members time to find the books and read them at their leisure.
Discussions about the books we read take place in a private Discord group (sign up for details!) and we meet “live” once for each book, on Zoom. And, since we are an international bunch, with members attending from several continents, “live” means online but not in person. We have special guests attend the Zoom meetings from time to time, including translators of the books we read or other experts. (We don’t have an outside guest for every book, but sometimes do.)
Members can choose to read the selected books in the original language or in any translation that exists. During book discussions, we address traditional book club themes such as character development, plot, and the use of literary devices, as well as aspects of translation that arise.
As of December 2024, we have read books originally written in Japanese, Swedish, Thai, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Korean, Russian, Tamil, Ukrainian, Icelandic, Persian, Chinese, Arabic, Wolof, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Danish, Catalan, Croatian, and we keep on reading!
