Translation Memory Defined
Use of translation memory is standard within the localization and translation industries and is beneficial for clients in the short- and long-term. Use of this technology is advantageous because it increases consistency for current and future versions of any given translation. Its use will also likely decrease the time needed to translate any future updates. It may be most helpful on high-volume projects but can also be valuable when used on shorter texts.
Translation tools are not machine translation, but rather, assist human translators by calculating levels of repetition within a text and accessing repetitious text in a human-created database. There are various translation tools on the market, but most of these tools conform to standardized formats so that translators and clients can exchange translation memory files even if they are using different tools.
