Localization Defined

Localization is the process of adapting a product for a specific region or country. Involving more than just translation, localization takes into consideration cultural and technical aspects as well. The word localization is often abbreviated as L10N (L, ten letters in the middle, followed by N).

Localization is most often applied to the cultural adaptation and translation of software and Internet-related applications, however, it can just as successfully be applied to any type of translation. The goal of localization is to fully adapt a product or text so that is accurately reflects linguistic, social, technical and cultural norms in translation.
